Security guard tends to man’s injuries after vicious assault outside Perth city centre supermarket

A security guard had to tend to a man’s injuries after he was viciously attacked outside a supermarket in the middle of Perth.

David Irvine repeatedly punched and kicked his victim, Scott Townsley, outside Tesco in South Street then scarpered on realising police had been contacted, Perth Sheriff Court heard.

The 37-year-old was later traced by officers wandering down another city street with his jacket covered in blood, fiscal depute Dev Kapadia told the court.

Mr Kapadia said it was about 4.20pm when witnesses saw the scuffle start.

“The incident happened in broad daylight,” Mr Kapadia said. “The incident was seen by a number of people who were walking by at the time. Security guards in Tesco became aware of the incident and went outside.

“The males were seen arguing. The accused pushed Mr Townsley to the ground and thereafter repeatedly punched Mr Townsley on the head and kicked him on the body while he was on the ground.

“The police were contacted and the accused then stepped away from the complainer who was then given first aid by a security guard from Tesco.

“The complainer was subsequently spoken to. He refused to engage or provide a statement to police. He appeared to have superficial injuries.

“One of the witnesses captured a photograph of the incident. When police were contacted a description of the accused was given.”

Mr Kapadia said acting on this information the investigating officers then traced Irvine on a different city street later in the afternoon.

“His jacket sleeves were bloodstained,” he said.

Mr Kapadia added that when questioned about the incident Irvine replied: “He was in my face.”

Irvine, of Elcho Court, Perth, admitted assaulting Scott Townsley by pushing him to the ground and repeatedly punching him on the head and kicking him on the body to his injury on May 21, 2021.

Defence solicitor Billy Somerville said in mitigation for Irvine: “He regrets this has occurred.”

Sheriff Charles Lugton sentenced Irvine to complete 90 hours of unpaid work over a period of 12 months.
