New Delhi: Maharashtra has recorded 4.74 lakh water bodies in the second Census of Water Bodies, nearly five times the number recorded in the first census, while Uttar Pradesh has 2.86 lakh, with Karnataka, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir also registering increases.
Five states -- Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana and Rajasthan -- recorded a decline in the number of water bodies compared to the first census, with Mizoram registering the sharpest fall of 63 per cent, followed by Arunachal Pradesh at 50 per cent.
