Second US student dies after being swept out to sea during beach nap

  • Two women, Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, died after being swept into the ocean by large waves at Bonny Doon Beach in Santa Cruz County on 10 June.
  • The friends, both recent high school graduates from Fremont, California, were reportedly napping near a keyhole formation at the notoriously hazardous beach when the incident occurred.
  • Nair died shortly after being rescued, while Sran remained in critical condition until Saturday before succumbing to her injuries, as confirmed by the Santa Cruz sheriff-coroner.
  • This fatal incident marks the fifth rescue in the past month along a one-mile stretch of coastline between Yellow Bank Beach and Bonny Doon Beach.
  • Authorities had issued warnings about dangerous rip currents and elevated surf, with lifeguards urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution due to unpredictable conditions.
