ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi -- The walls are there to protect them from the sea that a decade ago rose up in a tsunami and caused such destruction. With their view now obscured, residents of the Tohoku region have opted to turn the drab concrete barriers into works of art.

On Nov. 26, a massive mural was unveiled on a seawall in the Ogatsu district in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. The 54.6-meter-wide, 7.5-meter-high painting depicts the beautiful coastal scenery, and drew cheers from local residents and tourists.
