A seaside entertainment centre has been given the worst possible food hygiene rating after a Wirral Council inspection.
Inspectors concluded urgent improvement was necessary in the areas of ‘management of food safety’ and ‘cleanliness and condition of facilities and building’ at Riverside Bowl and Lazer Quest, on Marine Promenade in New Brighton. The next worst rating, major improvement necessary, was the verdict on ‘hygienic food handling’ at the premises.
A spokesperson for Riverside Bowl and Lazer Quest said there was an issue when inspectors visited the site, but it was rectified overnight. The full food hygiene report is not yet available, but information published along with the rating gave the premises the worst possible rating for management of food safety.

This covers having systems or checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat, evidence staff know about food safety and the food safety officer having confidence that standards will be maintained in the future. The business also got a zero star rating for cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, which looks at issues such as hand washing facilities, layout, ventilation and pest control.
Riverside Bowl and Lazer Quest got the second-worst possible score for hygienic food handling. This area of inspection includes food preparation, handling, storage, cooking, cooling and reheating.
A spokesperson for Riverside Bowl and Lazer Quest said there was an issue when inspectors visited the site, but it was rectified overnight. They added that the inspector saw the premises the next day and was “very happy” with what they saw.
The spokesperson added they will get reinspected imminently and move back towards the five star rating the business had previously.
