Search continues for missing Qld fisherman

Rescuers continue to search for a fisherman missing off northeast Queensland. (AAP)

The large-scale search for missing Queensland fisherman Colin Palmer goes on, with police saying there are no plans to wind back rescue efforts.

Mr Palmer, 41, and another man, 45, were standing at the back of the boat in waters off northeast Queensland when it was hit by a wave about midnight on Friday, causing them to fall overboard, Queensland Police said.

The current dragged their boat away quicker than they could swim after it. The pair attempted to swim back to shore but lost contact during the night.

More than 600 square nautical miles was covered in the search on Saturday after Mr Palmer's 45-year-old companion was found by a commercial fishing vessel in Townsville's Cleveland Bay about 6.30am on Saturday.

After the 45-year-old was rescued he was taken to shore and treated for exposure, before being transported to hospital in a stable condition.

"The search for Mr Palmer is continuing. It is a large-scale search covering inshore and offshore regions of Greater Cleveland Bay Area," District Duty Officer Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Whebell said on Sunday.

Multiple groups are involved in the hunt for Mr Palmer, including private vessels owned by friends and family of the missing man, he said.

A fixed wing aircraft and Rescue 521 helicopter are assisting, along with vessels from the coast guard, Volunteer Marine, Queensland Boating and Fisheries, the Water Police, the SES, and Maritime Safety.

"The search will continue for an undetermined period of time, and we will not be scaling that search back at this point," Sr Sgt Whebell said.

"Our thoughts go out to the family of Mr Palmer and they are being updated with the search efforts."

He said the man's family remain hopeful the fisherman will be found.

"As are all the searchers and emergency services - we're holding out hope for a successful outcome," he said.

It is not known where the boat was located when the men were knocked into the water, or where their vessel ended up.

Searchers had still not located the missing boat on Sunday, a Queensland Police representative told AAP.

Anyone who spots the four-metre, white Quintrex coast runner with the Queensland registration RD806Q is urged to contact police.
