Sean McVay trying to exercise patience with Rams’ young roster

Sean McVay is a high-energy coach, so it’s not exactly surprising to hear he struggles with patience sometimes. If he and the Rams want to have a successful season in 2023, though, he’ll need to be patient.

He fully realizes that, knowing how young and inexperienced the roster is. He and his assistant coaches can’t expect the team’s rookies to perform at a high level right away, even those drafted relatively early this year.

So McVay is trying to be as patient as he can, enjoying each day of practice and work he gets with his players.

“I think the patience is an important thing. I’m not a very patient guy, but hopefully I’ll continue to be a little bit more patient,” McVay told Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. “But we’re going to compete. We’re going to continue to strain and I think it’s going to be a really fun group to watch the way that these guys compete and hopefully continue to get better every single day, every single week when you guys are seeing us playing these games that count. Man, I’m just enjoying it and it is a blessing.”

McVay has shared some encouraging comments about the rookie class, from Steve Avila to Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson to Puka Nacua. It’s possible all three will contribute relatively early on this season, but with 11 of the Rams’ 14 draft picks coming on Day 3 of the draft, no one should expect them to be high-end starters in 2023.

The important thing is that they develop into starters at some point in the next four seasons, which will help the Rams build the foundation of their roster in 2024 and beyond.
