There’s a clear disconnect right now between the Los Angeles Rams and Cam Akers – similar to the way there was last year when Akers was out of the building for two weeks.
Akers was benched and made a healthy scratch in Week 2 against the 49ers, which caused him to post on social media that he was “just as confused as everybody else.” That caught Sean McVay off-guard because in his mind, there’s been clear dialogue between the team and Akers about the direction they’re going.
Buy Rams TicketsDuring his media session Monday, McVay said he was surprised by Akers’ post, calling it “unfortunate” because he thought the two had good conversations.
“Yeah, I feel very good about the clarity that was provided to him on Friday and Saturday both through him and David Mulugheta and that’s unfortunate, but I feel like it was very clear in regard to our dialogue, so that’s surprising to me.”
Based on the way McVay has spoken, there’s no chance Akers remains with the Rams like he did last year when there was a dispute between the two sides.
“That won’t be an opportunity. It’ll be an opportunity to be able to move – I feel good about the opportunity to be able to move him, but we won’t go back and forth on it,” he said flatly.
It doesn’t sound like the Rams will release him if they can’t find a trade partner, though.
“I want to be careful to put the cart before the horse, but what I feel good about is a dialogue between myself and him, Les (Snead) and (agent) David Mulugheta and so that won’t be something that is an option. That’s correct,” McVay said of whether Akers will be cut.
That leaves a trade as the only option, which is either a sign of McVay’s confidence in the Rams’ ability to move Akers or the coach trying to drum up interest by telling the rest of the league they’re not going to cut him. Regardless, Akers’ time with the Rams is all but over.
