Sean McVay: Matthew Stafford looks like a ‘human JUGS machine out there’

Matthew Stafford is going into his 15th season in the NFL, so he’s not exactly a young quarterback anymore. He just turned 35 in February and is coming off a spinal cord contusion that cost him the end of the 2022 season.

Sean McVay hasn’t seen any ill effects from that injury, nor Stafford’s age in the early portion of the team’s offseason workout program. Stafford has been on the field throwing passes to his teammates, something he wasn’t able to do last spring after getting an injection in his right elbow.

McVay loves what he’s seen from Stafford thus far, saying he looks like “a human JUGS machine out there.”

“He’s been awesome,” McVay said on NFL Network. “He’s got a great look in his eye. And even though he says he’s getting older, he still does look like a human JUGS machine out there. It’s like he was made to throw a football. When he’s feeling good, I feel a lot better as well. He just elevates people around him.”

The Rams will only go as far as Stafford will take them in 2023, needing to stay healthy for all 17 games after missing eight starts a season ago. If he and Cooper Kupp can stay on the field, along with Aaron Donald, the Rams will have a chance to make some noise in the NFC.
