Former Burnley manager Sean Dyche has revealed Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier FaceTimed him when he won La Liga with Atletico Madrid. Trippier spent two-and-a-half-years in Spain, winning the one and only top league title of his career under the management of Diego Simeone.
But it was Dyche who handed Trippier his first opportunity at Burnley after a loan spell at Barnsley. The 32-year-old quickly established himself as one of the Championship’s best right backs under Dyche, winning promotion to the Premier League in the 2014/15 season.
And since then, Trippier has not looked back, earning a move to Tottenham Hotspur which enabled him to make his breakthrough on both the Europe and international stage. But after winning his first league title in Madrid, Trippier certainly was not quick to forget his roots.

Speaking on Jimmy Bullard’s Off the Hook Podcast, Dyche recalled the unexpected FaceTime conversation he had with Trippier and believes it is a mark of his character.
He said: “This is when you know you’ve affected someone, and they’ve affected you back. Kieran Trippier FaceTimed me off the pitch when they [Atletico Madrid] won the league.
“That is the mark of an unbelievably respectful kid. I couldn’t catch my breath. I was drying my eyes. He said: ‘all right gaffer.’ I said ‘Trips, unbelievable mate.’ You know what I mean?”
