Sean Combs 2028 Release Update: US rapper turns legal student in prison, lawyer says ‘he's become like a paralegal’

Sean "Diddy" Combs may be serving a federal prison sentence, but according to his lawyer, the music mogul is far from idle, reports PEOPLE.

In a new update on Combs' life behind bars, attorney Juda Engelmayer revealed that the Bad Boy Records founder has immersed himself in legal work while continuing to pursue an appeal of his conviction. The comments offer a rare glimpse into how the 56-year-old is spending his days at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey.

The update comes as federal records show that Combs' projected release date has also been moved up once again, bringing him closer to a potential release in 2028.

'He's focused on the appeal'

According to Engelmayer, Combs remains heavily involved in his legal case and spends much of his time reviewing documents and preparing for the next stage of his fight in court. "He's focused on the appeal." The lawyer said Combs has taken a hands-on approach to understanding every aspect of his case while serving his sentence.

'Trying to be a better person'

Beyond the legal battle, Engelmayer said the music executive has also been reflecting on his life and future. "And looking back at his life and trying to figure out ways to improve and be a better person."

The comments suggest Combs is using his time in prison not only to challenge his conviction but also to reassess his personal journey following one of the most difficult chapters of his career.

'He's become like a paralegal'

Perhaps the most striking revelation from the interview was Engelmayer's description of how deeply Combs has immersed himself in legal research. "He's become like a paralegal, if not a lawyer already."

The attorney added that clients who actively engage with their cases often put themselves in a stronger position.

"My experience [is that] clients who are deeply involved in their cases are the ones who get further."

The remark has attracted attention online, with many readers surprised by the extent of Combs' involvement in his own legal defense.

Why Sean Combs is in prison

Combs is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence after being convicted on two counts of transportation for prostitution in 2025.

He was acquitted of more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. Since the verdict, the music mogul has continued to maintain his innocence and is pursuing an appeal through the federal court system.

His legal team argues that the sentence should be overturned or reduced, while prosecutors continue to defend the conviction.

Diddy's release date moved up again

Alongside the update on his prison life, Bureau of Prisons records show that Combs' projected release date has been adjusted once more.

The release date was initially listed as June 4, 2028. It was later moved to April 25, 2028, before being updated again. Current federal records now list February 23, 2028, as his projected release date. Officials have not publicly explained the reason for the latest adjustment.

However, reports indicate that Combs has been participating in rehabilitation programs while incarcerated. A representative previously said: "Mr. Combs is an active participant in the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) and has taken his rehabilitation process seriously from the start."
