Seamus Coleman explains why Spurs hammering 'felt like something different' for Everton

Everton captain Seamus Coleman said he believed the team sank to a new low at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

The Toffees put in an abysmal display in north London, as a a plethora of defensive errors allowed Spurs to romp to a 5-0 success.

The defeat leaves Everton in 17th place in the Premier League and just a point clear of Burnley in the relegation zone a place behind.

It was a loss that extended the Toffees' pitiful away form, as they remain stuck on just one away win in the Premier League all season. Overall, they have won just two games in their last 19 top-flight outings and taken nine points from those fixtures.

Speaking to the USA Network after the game, Coleman suggested the team had reached a nadir in the capital despite the array of horrendous performances turned in throughout the season.

"That was tough to take," said the Irishman. "It’s a very disappointed dressing room as you can imagine. We’ve had bad away form but that felt like something different.

"Frank Lampard since he’s come in has been brilliant but we’re a group of players who’ve been here all season so ultimately it’s down to us.

"It’s not been good enough and of course we believe in what we’re doing on a daily basis but that was really humbling. … You’ve got to believe."

Coleman had a tough night up against Son Heung-min, who consistently found a way in behind the Republic of Ireland international right-back.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher was critical of the Everton defence and said he had some sympathy with the club captain.

"Seamus Coleman, I actually feel sorry for him because he’s been a great full-back for Everton, people just running in behind him," he said.

"That goes back to Everton’s recruitment that Seamus Coleman is still playing right now."
