Seaman from Srikakulam dies in Port of Los Angeles

SRIKAKULAM: T Ravi Kumar (35), a Seaman from Srikakulam district, fell to death on a ship at the Port of Los Angeles in the USA on Wednesday.

The family members and relatives of Ravi Kumar said that Kumar had worked as a welder for over seven years and he had joined as a seaman a few weeks ago and had gone to Port of Los Angeles a few days ago.

Ravi Kumar was a native of M Sunnapalle village under Santhabommali Mandal in Srikakulam district and he was survived by mother, wife and two daughters- Anu and Pallavi.

As per the reports, Kumar fell around 50 feet down onto the deck of a ship from the superstructure. Though rescue and medical teams attempted to save him, Kumar was beyond medical help. The exact reason for the fall from the structure is yet to be ascertained.

Speaking to TOI, S Narayana, Sarpanch of M Sunnapalle village said that they have received a message from the company that Ravi Kumar died on the spot after he fell from a container. Ravi Kumar joined as a seaman a few days ago and he was killed in a tragic incident. We will approach the police, district administration to take steps to speedy completion of the legal formalities and bring back the body to the village, he added.

Ravi Kumar was the youngest among four brothers and two of his brothers died in tragic incidents a few years ago. Now the sole breadwinner of their family Ravi Kumar was also killed in the tragic incident. Our life is devastated with the sudden demise of Ravi Kumar and we are expecting that the shipping company may give compensation to the family members of the victim, Narayana added.

The incident washed away the hopes of Ravi Kumar’s family. The locals are expecting that it may take at least three weeks to bring back the body from the USA.
