The Seahawks offense has been surprisingly good thus far this season. While Geno Smith has rightfully gotten most of the attention, the run game has started to pick up, as well.
After a slow start to the year Rashaad Penny has put in two strong games in a row, including a breakout performance against the Lions in Sunday’s wild road win. Penny is now up to 292 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 49 attempts this season. While those numbers are respectable they aren’t really the kind of incredibly explosive production we’d come to expect from him during his insane hot streak to end the 2021 campaign.
However, a closer look at some more nuanced numbers shows he’s still among the league’s best rushers. According to this chart, Penny is No. 1 in rushing yards over expected per rush and is also high in EPA per rush.

As defenses catch on to the fact that they have to respect Geno Smith – and that the Seahawks are going against type by using a pass-heavy attack, things should open up even more for Penny going forward.
