The Seattle Seahawks started strong against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night, taking a 12-7 lead into the half. Quarterback Sam Howell had passed for 153 yards, and the stable of running backs had rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries as a team.
Unfortunately, that’s where everything started to dry up, because as a team the Seahawks finished the game with… only 191 yards passing and 64 yards rushing on six carries. Yeah, that’s uh, not what you want to see.
Here is how every second half possession for the Seahawks went:
- five plays, -1 yard, punt
- three plays, 13 yards, punt (false start penalty)
- three plays, -1 yard, punt
- five plays, 22 yards, field goal
The inability to run the ball literally at all in the second half doomed this team, and it directly contributed to the offense being unable to sustain any drives until the final moments of the game. Unfortunately, the Seahawks offense in the second half resembled more of what we saw last year than what the unit looked like last week against the Chargers.
The silver lining is by the time the second half rolled around, the team was mainly comprised of third-stringers and roster bubble players. No starter played in Tennesee, leaving the backups the lion’s share of responsibility. I do not believe this was indicative of what the Seahawks offense is going to look like when September 8th rolls round.
Still, having a grand total of -1 rushing yard in two quarters of football is not going to get it done, preseason or not.
