Part of the fun with sports is delving into all the superstitions fans might have about particular aspects, such as uniforms, unfavorable matchups, “lucky” garments or even “curses.”
Unfortunately for the Seattle Seahawks, they are staring at some potentially bad luck this weekend as they host the Washington Commanders. There are two unfortunate streaks Seattle will look to finally overcome. For those who are superstitious, this is right up your alley.
1 – The Seahawks have never beaten the Washington football franchise at Lumen Field during the regular season.
Hard as it may be to believe, this is one of those shockingly true facts. Since Lumen Field opened its doors in 2002 (known as Seahawks Stadium), the Seahawks are 0-4 all time against the Washington franchise. Their games have gone as follows:
- 14-3 loss in 2002
- 20-17 loss in 2008
- 23-17 loss in 2011
- 17-14 loss in 2017
In fairness to Seattle, they have won both playoff games when they hosted Washington. It will also be the first time the Seahawks have played this franchise at home under the moniker of the Commanders. Perhaps the bad luck was retired with the previous name. But it remains to be seen, as Seattle will be battling another superstition going against them:
2 – The Seahawks have never won two games in a single season wearing the blue jersey/gray pants uniform combo.
When it comes to uniforms, this is where I get the most superstitious. As you are likely aware, I keep a uniform record tracker for all combinations and I put it at the bottom of articles on this topic. Since 2021, this combo went from being sparingly used at away games to being in the regular rotation, primarily at home now.
But in both 2021 and 2022, the Seahawks split 1-1 when wearing these threads. The only other season Seattle has worn this combo more than once was in 2012, and you guessed it, they were 1-1.
The Seahawks have already worn the blue jerseys with the gray pants, and had success by defeating the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7. They will look to have more success by finally break this mediocre .500 streak with their first ever regular season home win over the Commanders on Sunday.
