A high-speed police chase came to an abrupt end when a Mercedes driver lost control of the car and smashed into trees and a wall.
Matthew Watson was spotted speeding by police on March 30 this year, but failed to stop for them and instead led them on a pursuit that saw the 30-year-old hit speeds of up to 100mph in frosty conditions. Watson later crashed the car in Stanhope, Weardale, and told the arresting officers it was his mate's car and that he was on his way to see his girlfriend.
Watson, of, Colling Avenue, Seaham, appeared at Durham Crown Court to be sentenced for dangerous driving, drug-driving, and driving without a licence or insurance. He had pleaded guilty to the offences.

Matthew Hopkins, prosecuting, said police were on patrol when they spotted Watson in an orange Mercedes driving at speed on the A689 during "frosty" conditions. When police tried to flag him down, he briefly pulled over, but then took off before increasing his speed to 100mph. He said: "The traffic was minimal and the defendant braked heavily to 60mph in Frosterley and hit 65mph as he negotiated bends. The road conditions worsened and there was sleet and snow."
The court heard the pursuing police "lost traction" and had to reduce their speed due to safety concerns, but they soon caught up with Watson, who'd crashed the Mercedes. Mr Hopkins said: "He had crashed in Stanhope after losing control and travelled on the pavement, hit a tree and knocked another down. The car was resting against a dry stone wall which was partially destroyed."
Following the crash, Watson attempted to do a runner, but he was soon caught and arrested, before telling officers: "I don't have a licence, I'm doing lessons, it's my mate's car, I'm going to see my lass." A drug test was also carried out, with Watson testing positive for cannabis. The court heard he had one other conviction for assault, for which he received a suspended sentence.
David Callan, defending, said, Watson was of previous good character and had "turned his life around" since the dangerous driving offence. He said: "He has given up drink and made peace with his girlfriend and he has a child. He is a full-time carer for his mum, who is reliant on him." He added that Watson had also been a carer for his dad, who is now in a care home.
Judge Jo Kidd handed Watson a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and made him subject of a six month curfew between 8pm and 7am. He must also complete 150 hours unpaid work and he was banned from driving for 18 months. He must also complete an extended test if he wants a licence.
