Sea of Thieves is one of Xbox’s popular live service titles, created by Rare and still actively maintained since its release in 2018, with the latest update, Season 19, launching just a few days ago. The game itself is a shared-world multiplayer sandbox pirate game, where players pirate ships, hunt treasure and fight each other.
However, popular streamer TheBurntPeanut has been unable to play the game on stream. After trying it out, Twitch viewership spiked to 42,000 viewers, bringing fresh attention to the game.
That momentum quickly faded, as the game ran into issues and TheBurntPeanut couldn’t continue, resulting in a poor showcase for potential new players.
What went wrong during TheBurntPeanut’s stream
For a bit of added context, TheBurntPeanut is a hugely popular streamer who has seen a meteoric rise alongside ARC Raiders, taking on the persona of a Peanut. Recently, the streamer turned their attention to Sea of Thieves for some swashbuckling adventure, but within just 20 minutes of playing, the servers crashed, likely due to a DDoS attack.
Peanut attempted to continue playing but was ultimately unable to, leaving both him and his 40,000 viewers disappointed. It also sparked frustration among existing Sea of Thieves fans, many of whom pointed fingers at Rare for not being able to handle situations like this effectively.
That said, it’s not entirely clear what can be done to prevent DDoS attacks in cases like this. One user, @Wermux on X suggested creating a streamer safe zone with whitelisted users to play, and that is one solution.
Fortunately, TheBurntPeanut later addressed fans on his official Discord server, stating:
"Hey Bungulators, I am working on a way for us to give Sea of Thieves another try without getting ddossed offline and it's looking pretty good, and may even be able to give it another shot this week.”
If successful, TheBurntPeanut could introduce his audience of around 40,000 viewers to the game. It may also encourage other large streamers to give it a try, which could result in a significant boost in players.

I’m of two minds on this. More eyes on Sea of Thieves is definitely a good thing, and while I don’t personally watch streamers, I do enjoy the clips I’ve seen of TheBurntPeanut, so maybe there was a chance here for a resurgence in players.
