Musician and author Mark Lanegan has died aged 57.
The singer songwriter, who was known as the Screaming Trees frontman, died at his home in Killarney, Co. Kerry.
A statement on his Twitter account read: "Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland.
"A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley. No other information is available at this time. The family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time."
The singer was reported to have gone entirely deaf after contracting coronavirus last year.
He later suffered from cracked ribs and breathing problems.
After being rushed to hospital, he spent months in bed, "slipping in and out of a coma".
Lanegan was born in Ellensburg, Washington and was thought to be one of the most distinctive singers of his generation.
Following the break up of his band Screaming Trees, Lanegan participated on albums by Queens of the Stone Age, Soulsavers, UNKLE and Manic Street Preachers.
He also released eleven solo studio albums and collaborated with the late Kurt Cobain of Nirvana on an unreleased album of Lead Belly covers.
Tributes for Lanegan have flooded in on social media.
They read: "RIP Mark. Loved that voice all the way back since seeing this on a BBC2 "grunge" special in the olden days".
"Sleep well. You will be missed".
"words fail me, condolences to all that loved him drc".
"I can't believe this. Nothing makes sense right now."
"Right there with you. So sorry for this , brother. The music y'all created together lives on forever."
