Scream 6 star Melissa Barrera recently shared her thoughts on the film, which now serves as the conclusion to Sam Carpenter's franchise. Directed by Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the sixth installment of the Scream franchise follows Sam and Jenna Ortega's Tara as they are hunted by Ghostface in New York City. The movie was a box office hit, and plans for Scream 7 are already in motion.
However, Barrera was let go from the film last November due to social media posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict that were deemed anti-Semitic. As a result, it appears that audiences have seen the last of her character in the franchise.
In a recent interview with Collider, Barrera expressed her satisfaction with how her character's story concludes in Scream 6. She mentioned that she was contracted for only two movies and is content with the way things wrapped up for her character.
Barrera stated, 'I feel like the ending of Scream 6 was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like I got left in the middle. I did my two movies, and I’m fine. I’m good with that. I got two - that’s more than most people get.'
With the absence of Barrera's character and reports of Jenna Ortega quietly stepping away from the franchise earlier, Scream 7 is expected to once again serve as a soft reboot. Neve Campbell is set to return as Sidney Prescott, the original franchise protagonist, while Courteney Cox is in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers.
Given the departure of Sam and Tara, other Scream 6 cast members like Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding may also not return for the next installment. The upcoming film is likely to focus more on the original characters, resembling the tone of the earlier Scream movies.
It remains to be seen how Scream 7 will perform following the success of Scream 6. Barrera's positive outlook on her character's conclusion indicates a sense of closure for her in the franchise.
As the Ghostface legacy continues to haunt new victims in the bustling streets of New York City, the next chapter in the Scream series promises to deliver more thrills and chills to horror fans.
