'Scouse not English' as hundreds divided over Liverpool independence

Liverpool is a city with a very unique identity and heritage and many are divided over whether it should be "independent".

The phrase "Scouse not English" is used a lot, especially when it comes to football, and it's not difficult to see why. Our city and its people have long been at odds with the idea of English identity for a number of reasons.

This has led to the rise of a popular debate: should Liverpool achieve independence from the rest of England by holding a referendum? The idea has gained traction on social media, and so we put the question to ECHO readers.

We asked, if there was a possibility of a vote for independence, would you vote for it?

Some believe that that the history of Liverpool makes us "English through and through". ECHO reader Crusius said : "Walk around our city and look at the amount of monuments to Liverpool men who have laid down their lives for this country. This city is English. It has been since the very foundation of England and was under the Northern Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms before that. We were given our town charter in 1207 by King John of England.

"We are England, through and through. People who don't like that should look at a map and choose to emigrate. There are many other countries they can go to."

While others believe we should have more control over our own governance, with Merseyside almost always voting for Labour, while the Conservative Party wins general elections. Sean1990 said: "100% leave, the financial side would be difficult but we could potentially join Ireland or Scotland as a sovereign state. We would have a say in the election for mayor and where money is spent.

"Go to the euro which will be stronger than the pound. Tax the the massive companies or get them to open manufacturing in this city which offers jobs and ability to ship to the rest of England. I'm all for leaving."

Some however, believe that the "independent country of Liverpool" would not survive without governance from Westminster. CyclingMartial said: "And the current Labour council would take full charge? We wouldn’t last very long at all, I just don’t get the mentality behind this “I’m scouse not English” statement"

Some are clearly more proud to be called English than others, with Kensington1962 adding: "We are an English city & always will be."
