Scottish Water and Met Office issues advice on what to do if your pipes freeze

This week we have seen some less than pleasant weather conditions with lows of -18C recorded in some parts of Scotland.

And in Glasgow alone, we are seeing people record -8C as the wake up to go to work in the morning.

But with December only half way through, we are set to experience yet more snow and other winter weather conditions.

Because of this, Scottish Water have issued advice on what to do should you have frozen pipes.

In the video they said: "If a pipe freezes, find a stop valve and turn it off immediatly.

"You should open all cold water taps to drain the system, but never turn on the hot taps because if you have a hot water cylinder, this may collapse if the pipes leading to it are frozen.

"Before attempting to thaw out your pipes, check for leaking joints or bursts. If there are none and it's safe to do so, then gently heat any frozen sections with a heated cloth wrapped around the pipe.

"Never apply a direct flame or attempt to thaw pipes by switching on your immersion heater or central heating boiler.

Because of the bad weather and colder climate we are all currently facing, the Met Office have also issued advice.

As well as telling people the same as Scottish Water, the weather experts also issued advice on how to prevent frozen pipes.

They say the following:

  • Make sure you know where your stop tap is and check it’s working every six months.
  • If you are going away, leave your heating on low.
  • Ensure all pipes in your roof space or loft, as well as pipes in other areas that may be vulnerable to the cold, are insulated and your boiler is serviced.
  • Have the name and telephone number of your nearest WaterSafe qualified plumber to hand. Keep it by the boiler or stop tap.
  • Get a neighbour to check inside your home occasionally, if you go away.

They concluded: "If you need help to get your plumbing prepared for winter, or have a frozen or burst pipe, you can find a qualified, approved plumber near you through the national accreditation scheme WaterSafe, which is backed by all water companies in the UK and the drinking water regulators. Visit the WaterSafe website or call 0333 207 9030."
