Glasgow-based EOLAS Insight will be first UK company to use artificial intelligence and high-resolution satellite imagery to conduct a census of elephants that roam vast areas of Mozambique.
The elephant census is funded by the European Space Agency and uses satellites and light aircraft, similar to those that monitor Scotland’s wild red deer, making it a greener and cheaper alternative to helicopter-based counts.
EOLAS, in partnership with South-African conservation organisation Peace Parks Foundation, is working with the Glasgow-based intelligence firm Omanos Analytics to classify the elephants’ habitats while identifying wildfire and poaching risks.
