Scottish 'scenic trains' with glass sides and roofs could be rolled out for tourists

Special 'scenic trains' with glass sides and roofs could be introduced to certain tourist routes in the Scottish Highlands.

ScotRail and Transport Scotland are researching how to adapt glass-sided and roofed trains that currently operate in countries such as Switzerland, Canada, and Mexico. These may be part of a zero-emission replacement fleet for the Highland lines, as all ScotRail diesel trains must be scrapped before 2035 under current regulations.

The new trains are expected to operate on the West Highland Line to Mallaig, as well as the Far North Line to Thurso and Wick. The former is particularly popular amongst Harry Potter fans due to its usage as a filming location for the film series.
