Scottish region crowned best place in UK to go on holiday with your pet

New research has revealed the "most pet-friendly" holiday camping destinations across the UK - and a Scottish region has come out on top.

With National Love Your Pet Day coming up on Monday, people across Scotland and the UK will be looking celebrate their love for their pet. Whether it's a special tasty treat or an extra-long walk, there are plenty of ways to spend the day with your furry friend.

If you want to go one step further, or are just looking for an excuse for a holiday, you can head to a camping site with your pet. With so many camping destinations around the UK, experts at outdoor equipment website GO Outdoors have ranked the regions that offer the most pet-friendly sites.

According to the study, Dumfries and Galloway in the western Southern Uplands is the top region in the UK for pet-friendly campsites. The research reveals that 95 per cent of sites in the area allow pets to stay.

Camping options in Dumfries and Galloway range from quiet ranches like Balloch O Dee to the more lively Auchenlarie Holiday Park, which is home to a pool, bar, and bistro. There are also a number of walking and hiking routes to take your pet along to in the region, such as the Burns walk circular, the River Nith circuit, and the Striding Arches.

The other regions to appear in the top five are Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire, Swansea, and Snowdonia. According to the research, 92%, 90%, 89%, and 88% of their campsites respectively were found to be pet-friendly.

The study also looked at the top overall camping destinations in the UK, using factors such as price and internet access. Using this data, it assigned each one a score out of 10.

With a score of 9.36, Cairngorms National Park has been named the best place to camp in the UK. Home to stunning scenery and breathtaking landscapes, popular camping destinations include Wigwam Holidays Glenlivet and Glenshee Glamping.

The top five UK camping spots on GO Outdoors' list are all located in Scotland, with Dumfries and Galloway, Fort William, the Scottish Highlands, and the Isle of Skye placing second, third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
