Scottish referee Bobby Madden looks set to retire after dropping a major hint on social media.
The 44-year-old from East Kilbride, who resigned as a referee in Scotland during the summer to pursue his career in England, posted on social media today: "Twenty's plenty... it's time to hang up my whistle."
Madden had been a grade one referee for some time and in a 20-year spell in Scotland officiated several high-profile matches, including Scottish Cup and League Cup finals, Champions League clashes and games between Rangers and Celtic.
Controversy was sparked during Madden's first game in England when he yellow carded Lee Tomlin twice for time-wasting during a Yorkshire derby between Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers.
Before heading to England, Madden thanked the Scottish FA for their support during his career.
He said: "I would like to thank the Scottish FA for their support over the years – from my first match as a young referee to various derby matches and international appointments.
"It’s been some journey in that time, from Scottish Cup finals to refereeing and training during a pandemic, but the time is right for me for a number of reasons to relocate, and as a result I’m grateful for the opportunity with the FA."
