Scottish Premiership World Cup break dates confirmed with clubs set for lengthy hiatus

The SPFL have announced plans to introduce a five-week break to the Scottish Premiership calendar because of the World Cup.

For the first time in global showpiece history, it'll be taking place in the winter in Qatar between November 21 and December 18 at the end of this year.

Premiership clubs will pack up after round 16 of matches over the weekend of November 12/13 in the 2022/23 campaign for a five-week break.

Action will then resume on December 17/18 - the same weekend of the World Cup final. It has been revealed that Championship, League One and League Two clubs will play through this period.

Optimists will hope that this pencilled date for the Premiership's return is pushed back for Scotland's journey to the showpiece final, Steve Clarke's side set to contest the play-offs this spring.

Premiership football next season will begin on the final weekend of July this year, and will finish later than usual on the last weekend of May due to the World Cup break.

League Cup finals have taken place in December in recent seasons but will take place in February 2023 next term.
