Scottish Junior Cup: Wishaw look for town's backing in Maybole clash

Wishaw boss David Dunn hopes the town can come out and back his boys in the Scottish Junior Cup this weekend as the Beltane Park side hope to keep their run going in the competition.

After downing Bridge of Don Thistle in round one, Ayrshire cracks Maybole come calling this weekend and with Motherwell not in action due to the international break over the September weekend it is a chance for football fans in the area to take in the second round clash.

Wishy go into the game off the back of a 4-0 defeat to Ashfield in the West of Scotland League Second Division but Dunn is hoping to see a reaction from his players and give the fans who do turn out something to cheer about.

He said: “Saturday is a huge game for the club. The draw for the third round is already out as well so we are at home to Larkhall or Benburb if we can get through.

“It could be a chance for us to get a wee run. It can bring in good income from the club as well. We are not cash-rich so it’s good to get as many games in the competition as we can.

“We want to get a lot of people through the gate and with it being September weekend, it’s a big chance for us. We will be emphasizing that to the boys and we owe our fans a performance.

“I’ve got no doubt these boys will bounce back from Saturday. I’ve got faith in them and I hope they are hurting as much as I was at the weekend.

“Hopefully we can get a good crowd. For the size of the club and where we are, I still think we should get more fans through the gate. I would love to get more through but one of the main things is we aren’t playing well enough at the moment.

“We need to start putting on performances and start climbing the table.

“The more fans we get coming to games, the more money the club is able to bring in and everything around the club gets better.

“We are always striving as a club to keep pushing but the bottom line is, we need to get results and hopefully we can get that on Saturday.”

Wishaw were depleted for the Ashfield clash with key striker Kieran Brannan missing due to a family wedding, while Neilly Reynolds was struck down by Covid but both could be back for Saturday.
