A SCOTTISH island's only Post Office has been forced to close after a "large sum of cash" was stolen.

Officers are investigating a theft from the Post Office in Tiree.

The suspect is believed to have entered the premises in Scarinish at around 12.35am on Sunday, August 2 and again at around 12.30am on Monday, August 3.

At some point during one of these occasions, a four-figure sum of cash was taken.

The island's Post Office has now been forced to shut, with police warning of the "detrimental impact" it will have on the local community.

The suspect is described as a white male, of thin build, who was wearing heavy gloves, a scarf and a face-covering.

He also had a heavy jacket with a distinct patch on the back and was carrying a rucksack.

Sergeant Colin Oman said: “This is the only Post Office on the island and the theft of such a large sum of money has prevented it from re-opening this week, which will have a detrimental impact on the local community.

“We’re looking to identify the man responsible and would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area in the early hours of Sunday or Monday morning, to please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 1593 of Monday, August 3, 2026.

Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides, situated south-west of Coll.

The island has a population of around 700 people.
