Scottish Government confirms three deaths and 280 new Covid cases in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed THREE coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - rises to 812.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 280 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

In total, Tayside has recorded 76,878 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 334,046 people have had at least one jag, 314,197 have received at least two, while 249,429 have also received a third, or booster, vaccination.

Across the country, 7,162 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day.

There were 16 Covid-confirmed deaths reported meaning the country's overall death toll from the virus rises to 10,165.

There are currently 1,511 people in Scotland's hospitals being treated for covid with 43 in intensive care.

The figures come as Nicola Sturgeon has been reported to the UK statistics authority over claims the First Minister "seriously twisted" data on covid infections.

The SNP leader claimed this week that figures compiled by the ONS showed that infections in England were "20 per cent higher" than in Scotland.

But that interpretation of the numbers has since been challenged - with opposition MSPs pointing out the same report estimates that around one in 20 members of the public had covid last week on both sides of the Border.

Willie Rennie has now written a letter of complaint asking stats experts to verify the First Minister's claims.

The former Scottish Lib Dems leader warned the figures "may have been seriously twisted".
