Hamilton Accies hero Andy Winter doesn’t see Ross County as a ‘free hit’ in the Scottish Cup, and says they’re going for the win.
The Premiership’s bottom club visit their Championship counterparts in the fourth round on Saturday, and Winter says there’s the chance of progression, and landing a mouth-watering fifth round tie.
Having scored his fourth league goal in the 1-0 win over Morton from the spot – his seventh overall, with three more in the Premier Sports Cup group stages – Winter says he and Accies go into the New Douglas Park clash with confidence.
“We’ve got a massive cup game next week and we can’t ask for a better result, going into that game.
“We’re looking to win the game. If you get to this round you’ve got a chance of getting a huge draw in the next round, and who doesn’t want to play in that?”
Saturday’s win brought Accies to within four points of second-bottom Arbroath, with a game in hand, and Winter hopes it can kick them up the league table.
He said: “A win like that has been needing to come for a while.
“We know ourselves we’ve not been scoring goals.
“I’m always confident when I get a chance, but to get that goal and the win was nice.
“I’ll always back myself in front of goal, especially when you’re 12 yards out with no-one anywhere near you, so I was always confident when I was going to step up and take it.
“It’s massive to get goals, that’s what I’m here to do, but the win was the most important thing.
“We need to start collecting points on the board and get ourselves up the table, and that was the perfect way to start.”
Winter admits it has been a difficult season for Accies, with a lack of goals, but a 3-2 midweek win over League One strugglers Clyde in the SPFL Trust Trophy quarter-final – setting up a semi-final against Queen of the South next month – and Saturday’s victory has been a boost.
He said: “It has been a difficult season, but that’s two wins in a row now. We’ve got to look up now.
“Goals haven’t been flying in from anybody and that’s what I’m always looking to do in the team.
“We have to be honest with ourselves, we know we’re not scoring enough goals, and not just us up front, so we have to keep creating chances and they’ll come.
“In every game in this league it’s an absolute scrap, so you know you’ve just got to be up for the fight.
“If you are, that’s half the battle, so we’ll keep fighting and we’ll get ourselves out of this.”
