Scottish area named most affordable in UK to buy home is 'nicer than Windsor'

A Scottish area has been revealed as the most affordable region in the UK to buy a home and it has been called "nicer than Windsor".

According to new research by property website Zoopla, Inverclyde has the cheapest house prices anywhere in the nation. The council area, which sits at the mouth of the River Clyde, is home to settlements such as Greenock, Port Glasgow, and Gourock.

The housing site states that the average house price here is currently £101,400. This is four per cent higher than it was last year, but 185 per cent lower than the current UK average of £290,000.

With the cost of living crisis hitting household budgets across the country, many people are looking to save as much money as possible when considering purchasing property. With house prices significantly lower than the national average, Inverclyde will appeal to many prospective buyers.

As reported by The Express, there are currently one-bedroom flats in Greenock available on the Rightmove for just £35,000. This means that, for banks requiring deposits of just five per cent, only £1,750 is needed for a down payment.

As well as low property prices, Greenock also offers convenient transport links. In addition to a regular ferry service, Glasgow International Airport is located just 20 miles away.

Meanwhile, trains from Port Glasgow in Inverclyde to the centre of Glasgow take approximately 40 minutes with car journeys taking around the same length of time.

While Greenock town centre was previously named as Scotland's most deprived place in 2020, many residents say there is a lot to love about the area. Local David Thomson commented: "Inverclyde does have some great areas to live.

"It's also a great gateway to the Clyde estuary, Argyll and Ayrshire. It has its issues and it tends to be looked down upon but if you choose well there is value to be had."

Meanwhile, Lisa Collins added: "I've moved here from Windsor/Maidenhead. It is nicer.

"It's a beautiful place to live with glorious views and the people are just wonderful."

Commenting on Zoopla’s findings, estate agent Graham Crocket from Slater Hogg and Howison agreed that Greenock is one of Scotland’s most affordable towns.

He said: "Greenock and neighbouring towns in Inverclyde offer excellent value for money for those seeking a coastal view within a commutable distance of Glasgow. Greenock has long been associated with ship building on the Clyde, however in recent times a move towards the service sector has provided the mainstay of employment for residents.

"Whilst coastal views drive buyer demand, other socio-economic factors have made Greenock one of Scotland’s most affordable towns."
