Scottie Scheffler’s rollercoaster day with the putter, Adam Scott still cruising among 4 things to know from the AT&T Byron Nelson

S.Y. Noh got off to a fast start Thursday, tying the course record with a bogey-free, 11-under 60 to jump to the top of the leaderboard at the AT&T Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.

Noh made nine birdies and an eagle to take the outright 18-hole lead. His best finish so far this season has been a tie for 15th at the RSM Classic during the wrap-around season.

With a chance for 59 on the line, Noh decided to lay up on the par-5 18th. He’d go on to make a birdie to close out the 60.

“Today is going — everything going good. Even wedge game and putting, everything going good. I’m just trying to make birdie, just forget about the eagle 59,” Noh said after the round.

Here’s everything you need to know from the first round at TPC Craig Ranch.

Scheffler looked like he was going to casually win this tournament by 10 shots when he chipped in for an eagle at the sixth to get to 6 under on his day.

Then his putter cooled down.

He missed a seven-footer on seven, a four-footer on nine, a 12-footer on 10, an eight-footer on 11, a five-footer on 12 and a seven-footer on 13.

Then he got his stroke back.

A great chip on the drivable par-4 14th got him back to 4 under on the day, then a 17-foot birdie on 15 pushed him to five deep.

On the par-5 18th, Scheffler put his 260-yard approach to 14 feet and buried the eagle putt, the perfect ending to a rollercoaster round with the flat stick (67th in Strokes Gained: Putting). He signed for an opening-round 7-under 64.

Scheffler entered the week at +350 to take home the hardware and is now +200.

Scott had his best finish of the season last week at Quail Hollow, tying for fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The good vibes continued to roll for the Aussie on Thursday as he posted an 8-under 63 and he’s three shots off Noh’s lead.

“Yeah, the game was feeling really good there last week, and getting a result is always good for the confidence, too,” Scott said after he finished up. “Coming here on a course that’s going to throw a lot of birdies out there, getting in that attack mindset was key, and take advantage of the good swings.”

Scott is searching for his first victory since the 2020 Genesis Invitational. He’s currently +750 to win in Texas.
