Scott McTominay reveals Steve Clarke's pre-match message before Spain win

Scott McTominay revealed that Steve Clarke urged the Scotland players to seize their chance to make history before they sealed a famous 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden.

The Manchester United midfielder scored both goals in Glasgow – adding to his brace off the bench against Cyprus on Saturday – as the national team made it two wins from two in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

“We did really, really well,” McTominay told Viaplay. “We knew that they would have a lot of the ball and the manager said to be clinical when we had the opportunity to score. I thought we had more than enough opportunities tonight to really hurt them and score some goals.

“As a kid I was an attacking midfield player. I stretched a little bit and got too big for that. Now I’m more of a sitting midfield player but I like to do both. I like to be box-to-box and helping my team-mates defend as well. I know can add more goals and assists to my game and I think the last two games have been a good example of that.

“Everyone on the pitch was at it, diving around and making the game slow. It wasn’t really a clean game in terms of everyone just getting on with little fouls. Everyone was making the most of everything and it’s difficult but that’s the way it’s got to be when you want to keep a hold of a lead. Just look at this place, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s incredible.

“The manager said to us before we got on the bus ‘this is a chance to make your own legacies’. These are the nights that people remember in 20 or 30 years, the nights they look back on and say ‘I was there’. That’s what the game is about. It’s amazing every time we come to Hampden and we can’t thank the fans enough.”
