Scott McKenna urges Scotland to build on Armenia victory in Nations League opener

SCOTT McKENNA was pleased to open his international account in Scotland’s 2-0 win over Armenia at Hampden but the former Aberdeen man admits he was disappointed not to have finished the match with a brace.

The Nottingham Forest centre-half started on the left of a back three and put in a composed performance for the national side in their Nations League opener.

Anthony Ralston, making his first start for Scotland, opened the scoring on the half-hour mark before McKenna made it 2-0 to Steve Clarke’s side as he turned in John McGinn’s corner.

He had the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time before the goal was chopped off for offside and although he would have liked another strike to his name, he feels his team were worthy winners in Mount Florida.

“It was good,” McKenna told Premier Sports. “It was a great start for us tonight. It was important that we got the result and we did that.

“In the first half I thought we played well, we created chances and we got two goals.

“In the second half we just kept the ball and we were solid at the back as well.

“The goal was nice. It was probably one of the easiest goals I’ll ever score. John put in a great ball and it just landed on my head.

“I was a bit disappointed [with the disallowed goal] but that’s just football.

“I thought it was a solid performance. We kept the ball, we created a good few chances and on another night we could have a few more goals. I felt like we were pretty solid at the back as well.

“With the games coming thick and fast, we just need to try and keep improving all the time – and hopefully pick up another couple of results in the next five or six days.”
