Scott Brown insists the relentless attacking football of Celtic’s Treble chasers is every bit as impressive as the Invincibles side he captained under Brendan Rodgers.
And the Hoops hero admits watching Ange Postecoglou imprint his philosophy on the Scottish game is benefiting his own dug out career south of the border as he takes his first steps into management at Fleetwood Town. Brown has watched in admiration as Postecoglou’s side have stormed to the brink of back-to-back titles as they close in on a domestic clean sweep.
Having won 26 of their 28 games so far the current side could eclipse the unbeaten class of 2016-17’s record points tally of 106 - while they also stand just 16 goals shy of the 106 goals they rattled in under Rodgers six years ago. Relentless was a word continuously associated with Rodgers’ Hoops who went on to clinch four successive Trebles after Neil Lennon replaced the Englishman. And Brown insists there’s obvious parallels between the two teams. He said: “Both sides had that ‘never stop’ mantra.
"Whether you go to the 90th minute or the 97th minute you have to have that belief and drive in you that you want to win the game. The lads have fantastic energy and Ange has them playing some great football as well.
"To watch the games and see the flows and patterns and rotations.. it’s great to watch. I take a lot from Celtic as well. I have learned a lot over the years through a lot of great managers.
“Just watching Ange and how the lads play I am still learning. I’m a young manager and want to learn as much as I possibly can in a short period of time.
“In terms of parallels with how Brendan’s teams went at teams then yeah, I think that’s what Celtic fans want. They want to see you getting after teams.
“They don’t want to see you sitting in and letting teams have a lot of possession. They want to watch you driving forward, creating chances and getting shots at goal.
“Sometimes teams might get a little bit lucky. But for me the way they’ve played this season has been exceptional to watch.
“Their drive, willingness and Callum McGregor pulling the strings in the middle of the park has been a delight to watch. It’s fantastic football, they’re scoring a lot of goals and they have a lot of new faces. It shows you there’s no right way or wrong way to play football.
“The formation we played under Brendan was a little different to what Ange is playing. But both teams won a lot of games and scored a lot of goals.”
Brown, who won an astonishing 22 trophies in 14 years at Parkhead including 10 titles and four Trebles, was speaking as he promoted an event he and Mikael Lustig will host in Glasgow in May.
The former skipper might have been blown away by the style that has seen his old side storm nine points clear of Rangers with 10 games left to play - but he hasn’t lost the ability not to get ahead of himself.
Asked if he reckons another Treble will be forthcoming in the next few months he said: “They have a fantastic game coming up against Hibs so they good old cliche .. you take one game at a time.
“They have won one trophy and they need to make sure they concentrate on this week leading up to the Hibs game.”
