Scots teen with rare 'one in five million' cancer dies as mum pays tribute to 'mini-me'

A Scots teenager who bravely fought a battle with an incurable rare cancer has died. Maisie Fraser, 19, was diagnosed with Fibrolamellar Carcinoma, a form of liver cancer which affects just one in five million people worldwide in December 2020.

Her mum Cecilia announced on Facebook that the Inverness youngster passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, August 10. She wrote: “It is with the absolute heaviest of hearts that I need to tell you that my beautiful, brave mini-me passed away. Our hearts are shattered beyond believe.

“Thankfully it happened quickly and she had the people she wanted and loved the most by her side.

“So grateful that we were able to fulfil her wishes in that way and all Maisies ‘Wishes’ were adhered too.”

Maisie first started having chest pains in August 2020 but had simply but it down to being a smoker. Her chest pains persisted and she began to suffer severe headaches and suddenly lost a significant amount of weight.

She visited her GP and was sent for several tests, leading to a diagnosis of FLC on Monday, December 7, 2020.

Maisie underwent six rounds of chemotherapy at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital over 12 weeks.

Initially her cancer showed signs of slowing down, but doctors quickly found that it was not responding to treatment and there was no more they could do.

In March we told how Maisie, from Inverness, was desperate to complete her bucket list with the time she had left.

Maisie hoped to meet Gordon Ramsay, take a trip to Disneyland and quad bike in Iceland while she was still well enough.

Talking about her diagnosis, Maisie previously told the Record: "I just remember feeling nothing that day and then fear. I couldn't cry, I didn't smile and barely engaged in conversation.

"Even when my mum was breaking the news to family. I was in total disbelief.

"I'm sharing my story to raise awareness for childhood cancer."

Following news of her passing, her heartbroken friends took to social media to pay tribute.

Lilli Anderson said: “Just lost for words. There’s no one I admired more than you, I was so lucky to have you a part of my life. To be able to call you family. Maisie I will always love you my darling.”

Shay Gunn Mackenzie said: “My heart is broken. You are the brightest girl I’ve ever met. You were there for me through so much and am gonna be so lost without your crazy advice, every time I needed to talk to you you were there.

“Through all my hard times you were the most positive girl, so no matter how hurt I was you still managed to keep me laughing. I’ll miss you forever.”
