A radio show hoaxed its listeners when it claimed Harry Styles was going to partner a teenager to her high school prom.
Superfan Anna Carty of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, got in touch with DJ Katy J on Capital FM to say she needed some help finding a date for her school dance this week.
The show then played a voice message they said was from Harry, 28, telling her he’d love to come as he’d be in Scotland for a sell-out concert on Saturday.
They even played a voice message to Anna over the air, claiming to be from him.
Katy J told the teenager: “We tried our best to work some magic behind the scene and we do have a message from Harry Styles for you if you’d like to hear it?”
A voice, claiming to be Harry, can be heard as he then said: “Anna, how’s it going? It’s Harry Styles here - hello. Look, Katy J passed on your invite to the prom and I’m sure it’ll be a good Scottish party.
“I’d love to be there, so just send me the details and I’ll see what I can do. See you soon!”
Katy J told her: “You heard it from the horse’s mouth, I have a feeling that he might rock up at prom.”
The story, was picked up in the UK and America – but the voice of Harry was Capital London DJ and TV host Roman Kemp.
But Anna said they had been in on the hoax, adding: “It wasn’t real. I enjoyed being on the radio and it was a good laugh
“It was just a bit of fun and I’m looking forward to my prom. I knew when I heard the voice on the phone that it wasn’t Harry Styles.”
But a radio insider said: “Many of us were astonished when we found out this was a hoax and Capital in Scotland thought it was fine to broadcast.
“Thousands of listeners heard that what they thought was Harry Styles saying he hoped he’d be able to make it to Anna’s prom as he’d be in Scotland for his concerts.”
