Scots 'shouldn't have to wait 10 or 20 years for competent government', says SNP MP

AN SNP MP has said that Scotland “shouldn’t have to wait every 10 or 20 years for people south of the border to decide they want a more competent government”.

Speaking on BBC’s The Nine, SNP MP John Nicolson clashed with Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine.

The pair were being interviewed following Liz Truss’s announcement that she will resign as Prime Minister and that a new Tory leader will be chosen over the course of next week.

Nicolson said: “What this pantomime farce shows us yet again is that we shouldn’t have to wait every 10 or 20 years for people south of the Border to decide they want a more competent government.

“We should elect the government we want every General Election and get back into the European Union.”

Jardine said she found the comments “offensive” to which Nicolson replied: “Well I find it offensive you’ve dropped your commitment to [the] European Union which you used to be so proudly in favour of.”

The LibDem MP replied: “I haven’t. My party has never dropped its commitment to the European Union.”

Nicolson then pressed Jardine on whether or not the party wanted to get back into the EU.

A key part of the Scottish Government’s plans to have a thriving economy in an independent Scotland involves re-joining the EU, as laid out by Nicola Sturgeon earlier this week

Jardine continued: “We have said that we want to be as close to Europe as possible.”

Nicolson added: “That’s a different thing. We want back in the European Union.”

The SNP MP re-tweeted the clip on social media with the caption: "Once upon a time the LibDems were a pro #EU party.

"These days - however they try to spin it - they’re a pro #Brexit party like Labour and the Tories. If you want to rejoin the EU only @theSNP and independence can deliver it. Have a watch. #indyref2023"
