A Scots schoolboy has earned his pilot licence before even passing his driving test.
George Walker Jnr, who is following in the footsteps of his late Grandad who flew in the Royal Air Force, has gained his Private Pilot Licence at just 17-years-old. The sixth-year student at Inverurie Academy in Aberdeenshire now hopes to become a commercial pilot with an airline.
As reported by Aberdeen Live, George’s grandad, Bob Southall, flew in a plane affectionately known as “The Whispering Giant.” The aircraft is actually the RAF Bristol Britannia Series 253 C.Mk1 XM496 ‘Regulus’ - one of the last of its kind ever to fly - and is currently on permanent display at Cotswold Airport in England.
George and his family recently visited the aircraft with his family. The youngster was “delighted and blown away” that he had the opportunity to see one of the aircraft his grandad flew all those years ago and the day “meant the world” to him.
The teenager was even able to match the registration of the Britannia to a long list of entries in his grandad's Royal Air Force pilot log book.
George's mum, Jenny Walker, said: "As George continues in pursuit of his own career in aviation, we remember with great pride the footsteps he follows and know with certainty how incredibly proud my dad would be of his grandson, who, I'm sure, he will sit beside on every journey he takes."
As one of his first flights George, who is still yet to sit his driving test, plans to take his mother up to Dornoch for the day.
