Scots safari park welcome 'adorable' new baby penguin with summery name

Blair Drummond has welcomed the arrival of a beautiful new baby penguin, and it has been given a suitably summery name.

The Stirling-based safari park announced on Wednesday the birth of Sunny, a "charming" Humboldt penguin chick. The youngster was born on April 19, following a 40-day incubation period to penguin parents Sheldon and Freckles.

According to Blair Drummond, Sunny is going from "strength to strength", and currently weighs an impressive 3kg. The gender of the newborn has yet to be confirmed.

Blair Drummond Safari Park commented: "Sunny, still sporting some fluffy grey feathers, has already captured the hearts of the park’s keepers. The gender of this little bundle of joy currently remains a mystery, but Sunny’s name reflects the cheer they have already brought to the team."

It added: "In the coming months, Sunny will gradually begin to explore the penguin habitat here at Blair Drummond but for now, the chick is spending all their time in the nest box."

The safari park took to Facebook to share the news, and before long the announcement had received over 230 likes and more than 45 comments. Many people were quick to share their thoughts on the "adorable" youngster.

One Facebook user wrote: "Aw Sunny, gorgeous".

"The cutest things on the planet," a second argued, while a third wrote: "I would very much like one".

Humboldt penguins are medium-sized penguins that live primarily along the coasts of Peru. They are known for their swimming ability and can also dive up to 1500 feet underwater.

The species is currently classed as vulnerable, as a result of threats such as overfishing, rising sea temperatures, and habitat loss.
