Scots medics tell of daring mission to rescue seriously injured UK fighter in Ukraine

Two Scots medics staged a daring raid deep into Ukraine to rescue a stricken UK fighter nicknamed “Rambo”. Craig Borthwick and Ewen Cameron rescued Bristol-born Shareef Amin, 40, after he suffered severe injuries in a Russian bomb attack in Odesa.

Ex-cop Craig, 53, told how he and Ewen – both volunteers in Ukraine for UK medical charity ReactAid – leapt into action after Shareef made an appeal to get home for treatment. Despite coming under heavy Russian bombing, Craig and Ewen managed to get him out of the under-fire city.

They then faced the almost impossible task of transporting the wounded man 600 miles across Ukraine and over the border into Poland where he could be airlifted to safety. The heroic pair finally managed to get Shareef safely on a plane back to the UK where surgeons are attempting to rebuild his shattered body.
