A man was left in the lurch 86 miles from his car when his ferry was diverted.
Calum MacLachlainn had just set off from Mallaig to Uist on Friday when he got a message from CalMac saying the next day’s return trip would dock in Oban because of poor weather.
Calum had booked the trip to see his dad, who has been ill. He said: “Within five minutes of leaving Mallaig, the minute the ropes were off, they sent a text saying the Saturday sailing would go to Oban.
“If they had told me that before I boarded the ferry I would have gone a different way or on a different date.”
When he arrived in Oban, he demanded that CalMac pay for a taxi to Mallaig to retrieve his car.
Calum said: “I said I was going to stand there until the police removed me.”
CalMac relented but Calum had to stay the night in Oban before the two-hour taxi to Mallaig and a trip to Mull, where he lives.
CalMac said: “While our conditions of carriage state we do not have to provide alternative transport when weather disrupts a sailing, our port staff arranged [it]… as a gesture of goodwill.”
