A grandad has been left "battered and bruised" after a bin lorry allegedly ploughed into the side of his motor. Peter Lewis, from Peterhead, was rushed to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after being pulled from his wrecked car on Thursday morning.
The 58-year-old was on his way to work when he claims a recycling truck smacked into him near the old AECC in Bridge of Don. Despite suffering soft tissue damage, the oil industry technician says he feels "lucky" to have escaped with minor injuries.
Speaking to Aberdeen Live, he said: “At first I didn't know what had happened as the glass had smashed out of the window and the car had been knocked right around and I ended up in the other lane. I'm a bit battered and bruised but apart from that I'm pretty much alright.
"The doctors said I have a bit of soft tissue damage... It is what it is, we just need to wait and of course there's more important people than me. I felt a bit stiff down my side and at the top of my shoulders. I feel very lucky.
"The car itself, I don't think I'll be getting back, which is a shame. It's been 30-odd years I've been driving about in and out of Aberdeen. I travel into Aberdeen everyday so I'm a little cheesed-off since I take photos for a hobby and my car has been all over Scotland."
It wasn't the first serious accident for the part-time snapper, who drives across the UK to pursue his hobby. Some 17 years ago on the way to a Rangers vs Aberdeen game in Glasgow, he and his family were in a serious accident - leading to Peter's wife calling him 'the cat' for the number of lives he has.
He added: "We were hit up the Toll of Birness before with my kids who were only young at the time. My father-in-law couldn't work again and tragically the guy in the other car died.
"I've had people go into the back of me coming through red lights and all that too. But it's been nothing major like that. My wife and I always joke about me being a cat - I've used up so many lives over the years."
Peter added he hoped people would take more care on the roads. He said: "I think there's more and more folk driving through Aberdeen now. I've driven all over Britain but now Aberdeen is bad for people coming shooting through the lights at the last minute and the likes."
