A Scots dad’s life was saved by hero football fans who rushed to give him first aid after he suffered a heart attack in the middle of a match. James Kirkwood, an amateur player for Stoneywood Parkvale FC, collapsed on the pitch during a pre-season friendly clash at Arjo Wiggins Park in Aberdeen on Monday night.
Members of the public and fellow players raced to help the stricken 39-year-old, who thankfully regained consciousness before being rushed to hospital by ambulance for further treatment. The club have issued a statement addressing the medical emergency and wished James, better known as Kirky, a speedy recovery.
Stoneywood Parkvale FC wrote: “Last night at Arjowiggins Stoneywood Park our junior and amateur football teams contested in the annual pre-season friendly. Unfortunately the game had to be abandoned just prior to half-time as amateur player James Kirkwood (Kirky) collapsed after suffering a heart attack.
“CPR was quickly administered by both clubs until the emergency services arrived with a defibrillator. Kirky soon gained consciousness and was then quickly taken to hospital where he is making good progress. A massive thank you to both clubs for acting so swiftly and of course the emergency services. We all wish Kirky a speedy recovery.”
The footballer’s wife has also issued her heartfelt thanks for the support the family have received.
Debbie Kirkwood wrote: “Thank you all so very very much for calls / texts / messages. To the club / first Response and more importantly the guys who stepped up and helped give Kirky a fighting chance (Greg Morrison) ... true heroes.
“Very emotional and tough few days. Lots more to come but hopefully home sooner than later. Lots of love to you all xx”
Pal Derek Folganan added: “Well done to all involved, especially Greg Morrison and Ian Davidson. Those two, along with the mum (trained in first aid) of one of the players, played a huge part in ensuring a very positive outcome.”
