Scots flat filled with rubbish and dirty dishes sells for six times £10k asking price

A property filled with rubbish has sold for nearly six times its asking price at auction.

The first-floor two-bedroom flat on Cochran Street in Paisley went under the hammer at an Auction House Scotland event in Glasgow on Thursday, with bids starting from £10,000. According to estate agents Zoopla, the apartment was the second-cheapest property on sale in the Renfrewshire town.

Auctioneers had touted the property as a 'doer upper' – packed with old coats, an ironing board, old cans of energy drinks and manky old cups left by the sink. The lucky buyer will have a substantial clean-up job on their hands after picking up the keys.

Images shared by Auction House Scotland ahead of the November 3 sale showed the kitchen was littered with rubbish, half-used jars of coffee and even a bottle of washing-up liquid by the sink, which was filled with grubby plates.

The two bedrooms are described as 'generously sized' and the living room, which includes a couple of electric heaters, is said to be large.

The buyers picked up the Cochran Street flat for £59,500 – far more than the starting bid, but below the sale price of other flats on the same road, which went for between £79,000 and £93,000, according to the auction house.

The Paisley flat is the latest in a number of eye-catching properties making headlines for their state of repair.

Auction House Scotland previously sold off a £40k house in Glenrothes that was strewn top-to-bottom with rubbish.

That particular house eventually went for £24,000 more than its asking price.

However, the auctioneer has clearly had the last laugh, selling onto a happy investor who will likely be able to turn a profit after putting in the work to make the flat look brand new.

As one Record commenter noted when the house went up for sale: "That's an easy fix – a few jumbo black bags, some elbow grease and go from there."
