A domestic abuse brute who assaulted his former Scotland International partner has parted ways with the club he signed for just weeks ago. Paul Tansey, 37, parted ways with East of Scotland League side Whitehill Welfare, after joining them in July.
Tansey, the brother of former Scotland star Leigh Griffiths, abused Celtic's Lisa Robertson during a 10-month long tirade. After his conviction in May, he was sacked by his then-club Penicuik Athletic.
However, East of Scotland division one side Whitehill quietly snapped up the brute during the summer. The move sparked backlash in the community of Rosewell, where the Midlothian club are based, and led to a petition by locals, calling for Tansey's contract to be terminated.
Tansey started all four of Whitehill's games so far this season, but last night, on the eve of their cup clash with Kennoway Star Hearts, the club revealed that they had parted ways with the midfielder. Posting on Twitter, they said: "Whitehill Welfare FC can confirm that Paul Tansey has left the club. We will be making no further comment on this matter."
Tansey previously pled guilty to engaging in a course of conduct which was abusive of his partner between July 2020 and May 2021. One incident saw the footballer, from Dalkeith, headbutt Lisa after he turned up in a fit of rage rage at her Edinburgh home.
He also regularly checked up on her phone use and accused her of cheating on him throughout the duration of their relationship. The midfielder also repeatedly contact Lisa by phone and text, attend her home uninvited and threatening to self harm. Tansey was given a five year non-harassment order and 80 hours unpaid work.
After being signed by Whitehill, fuming locals released a statement along with their petition to have Tansey removed from the club.
It read: "The people of Rosewell and the wider Midlothian area do not condone domestic abuse of any form and it is not welcome here amongst this family-oriented community. Local football is a wonderful tradition, but a team cannot possibly support a person who has very deliberately physically and emotionally harmed others with lasting consequences.
"This community certainly will not. Too often we hear about players convicted of domestic abuse within football, and we will take a stand against it."
Celtic FC midfielder star Lisa, 30, signed for the Glasgow club in 2020 and was on loan at Birmingham last season.
She has also played for Hibernian Women, Glasgow City and Durham Women FC and earned eight full international caps with the Scotland Women's national team.
