A Scots cyclist says he "could have been killed" after a hit and run driver knocked him off his bike and sped off from the scene. Scott Rennie, from Uddingston, was thrown from his bicycle after being struck by a white BMW as he peddled through Bothwell Road in Hamilton on Saturday morning.
As the 40-year-old cycled towards the junction, a female driver overtook him and struck his bicycle. Scott was thrown off his bike and sent sprawling across the road but the callous driver sped off.
Speaking to the Record, Scott said: "The woman could have killed me.
"Instead of staying behind me to turn left up to the retail park, right at the last minute she entered the right hand lane and cut out in front of me. She then hit me side on, throwing me from my bike into the centre of the road.
"There's no way she didn't know she hit me. There's no way she couldn't have seen me. It was a full-impact collision."
"I was lying on the road and I could see her driving off. I was just thinking, please stop.
"But because she drove off and hasn't given a care in the world I will definitely be pressing charges if police find her."
Staff from a nearby restaurant rushed to Scott's aid and called emergency services. Police and medics quickly arrived at the scene and he was treated in an ambulance.
Scott was badly cut and suffering from shock, but asked ambulance staff to take him home. He took a turn later in the evening and ended up in hospital.
"I was given the option of going to hospital but I stupidly said no and asked if they could take me home because I was humiliated and live alone and had to attend to my cat", said Scott.
"My friend came over to stay but I suffered a seizure. The next thing I remembered he was driving me to hospital and when I arrived at Monklands I took another episode.
"I was placed on an IV drip and given morphine, then sent for an X-Ray and CT scan. My hands and my feet were swollen, and my pelvis and shoulder were found to be injured.
"Thankfully the X-Rays showed I hadn't broken any bones."
Scott was sent home from hospital with crutches but counts himself lucky he was wearing his helmet.
He added: "I fell on the right hand side and the helmet caught the impact. If I didn't have that on it would have been a lot worse.
"Cycling has been a way for me to get out and relieve stress. I also use cycling as a way of getting out as I've had some issues over the last couple of years with ill health."
Officers confirmed they have launched a probe into the incident.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.05 am on Saturday, August 6, police received a report of a male cyclist having been struck by a car in Bothwell Road at the junction of Caird Street, Hamilton.
“The 40-year-old cyclist was treated at the scene by SAS. The car involved in the incident drove off and police enquiries are ongoing to trace the vehicle and driver."
