A Scots kitchen builder who won £25,000 has told how council bosses feared he could end up in an accident on the motorway due to him ‘blubbering’ with joy. Richard Brown correctly guessed the five-figure sum on Clyde 1’s Cash Register on Thursday as his cheering colleagues watched on and filmed his heartwarming reaction.
The 37-year-old burst into tears after discovering he was getting his hands on the radio show prize which will now pay off his wedding to fiancée Maggie Mclennan later this year. The duo, from Coatbridge, are set to tie the knot at Lodge on Loch Lomond on September 3 after first getting engaged back in 2017 while on holiday in Spain.
Richard, who works for City Building in Glasgow, told how bosses sent him home early from his shift to celebrate with his 36-year-old partner but had slight concerns for his safety. He explained: “My bosses have been amazing since I won. They told me to go home and just celebrate with my partner.
“But they told me to give them a call when I got in the house because I was a blubbering mess and they didn’t want me having an accident on the motorway. A few of the guys phoned to make sure I was safe in the house. I couldn’t ask for a better place of work and the group of guys I work with are phenomenal.
“It was actually my union rep that posted the initial video. He asked if he could post it on his Facebook for the guys to see. I told him aye, that was no problem but then it just went viral overnight.
“I’m totally overwhelmed. Everybody is elated for me. I couldn’t believe it. It’s not even just the fact that I’m going to be able to pay off my wedding but just seeing some of the comments that people have made.
“I never realised it would get so big. Maggie didn’t believe us at first. She thought I was playing a prank on her and then Gary Spence came on the phone and said I was being serious, I’d just won £25,000.
“Maggie’s response was that she was glad she didn’t swear.”
Richard, who previously served with the Scots Guards explained why the pending nuptials mean more to him than ever as he plans to fulfil a wish of his late mum, Marion Mcmillan, who passed away in 2018 aged just 59.
He explained: “Maggie and I have been together for just under eight years. I asked her to marry me in 2017. We were on holiday in Costa Brava.
“We went on a day trip and I was going to propose on the beach but my mum was with us at the time and she was adamant that she was going to get to see it. It was a whole family day out so I ended up popping the question right there in the street.
“I’m glad I did it because my mum’s no longer with us now so I’m glad that she got to see that. That’s the only reason we’re having a big wedding - it’s what my mum was wanting for us.
“A full Scottish wedding. I’ve just been working every day possible to get the money for it. Mum was definitely looking out for me on Thursday anyway.
“We’ll probably spend the weekend catching up with the family and celebrate not having to have any debts once we’re married. It’s a real relief off our shoulders.”
