Police in Glasgow have released the image of a man they want to speak to in connection with an alleged use of pyrotechnics during a Europa League match at Celtic Park in August last year.
Officers believe the dark-haired man can "assist them with their ongoing investigations" into the incident, which occurred at 9.05pm on Saturday August 18 2021 at Parkhead. Investigators say a "pyrotechnic-type device" was thrown from the stands during the match, between Celtic and AZ Alkmaar, and landed at the side of the pitch.
Nobody was seriously injured as a result. However, cops want to speak to the man in the picture who was in the vicinity of the area from which the pyrotechnic was thrown - and they believe he may have information that can help them with their enquiries.
Possession of smoke bombs is not illegal, as they are controlled by the same laws that govern fireworks. But pyrotechnic devices such as smoke bombs, fireworks and flares are illegal to possess at football games under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc) Act 1985.
Police Constable Fraser McGill of the Greater Glasgow Divisional Violence Reduction Unit said: “We believe this man may have information which could help our enquiries so I would urge him, anyone who recognises him or anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
"You can call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 2378 of 18 August, 2021. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111."
Celtic were playing against AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of a Europa League play-off at the time, which they went on to win 2-0. The Hoops won 3-2 on aggregate but failed to pass the group stages after finishing third in their group.
